Welcome back people! It's been a little while because of illness and other crazy personal matters, but it's great to be back. In the past, I've covered deaths, commercial vs. underground hip-hop, and old school vs. new school. Today's topic will be a very relevant question. Where are my female emcees? Is this truly a man's game? Gone are the MC Lyte's and the Queen Latifah's and the Salt-N-Pepa's. All that is left is...Nicky Minaj?? Don't get me wrong. This young lady has tremendous star talent. However, surely we have to have more than just her. Word came out a couple weeks ago that Ruff Ryders' former first lady, Eve, is back to put out a new cut at month's end. Now where are the rest? Back in the 90s and early millenium, there were quite a few female emcees (i don't use that term lightly). Rappers such as Bahamadia, Heather B., Rah Digga, the aforementioned Eve, Paula Perry, and Jean Grae were in serious demand in their day. Now the marketplace is very dry with female talent. If they're out there, the females are basing everything on sexually themed lyrics much like another late 90s prodigy Lil' Kim. For one breath of hope in NC native Rhapsody, we have a blond-haired, blue eyed, version of Lil' Kim called Iggy. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm waiting for the new crop of reputable and TALENTED female emcees to start giving the guys something to sweat about. Nicky can't just be the only one. Until next time, be good. I will leave you with what we're missing in the game of hip-hop.
