In this hip-hop game, we easily acknowledge our iconic producers that helped establish hip-hop to where it is today. However, there's become something that is a moderately discussed topic within our culture today: the evolution of White hip-hop producers. With Rick Rubin being credited as the first Caucasian hip-hop producer for the likes of Run-DMC and LL Cool J in the early to mid-eighties, his rock-influenced, stripped back style helped create genre-blending sounds for early Def Jam artists such as the aforementioned artists, especially Run-DMC's Raising Hell. From there, you really didn't hear about a lot of non-Black hip-hop producers, at least none that played substantial roles in the sounds of future hip-hop artists. This changed with the emergence of Latin American hip-hop group, Cypress Hill, and their Italian-American DJ/producer, DJ Muggs, who helped bring dark, hypnotic, and atmospheric sounds throughout all Cypress Hill's efforts, especially the outstanding first four. Also, the likes of DJ Mighty Mi of The High & Mighty, Ant of Atmosphere, and El-P started bubbling in the underground. Each presenting very excellent production for the efforts they contributed towards, especially El-P. From there, others like The Alchemist, Necro, Marco Polo, DJ Shadow, RJD2, and Evidence of Dilated Peoples at that time were steadily making their names known within hip-hop circles and were embraced easily as much as any of their Black counterparts. Once the mid-thousands hit, we were hit with even more White producers that were, in all rights, very impressive. From the likes of Scott Storch to up-and-comers like Sebb, Blockhead, and Harry Fraud were becoming notables from the underground to the Billboard charts. While not necessarily a huge topic of discussion or vitriol, it is interesting to see how much Whites have embraced the culture in terms of not just the microphone and acknowledging legends that paved the way for them, but also producers that were massively influenced by icons such as DJ Premier, Marley Marl, Pete Rock, RZA, Havoc, and The Bomb Squad while not trying to be culture vultures. We will be highlighting sixteen of the most influential, the most impactful, and frankly the most talented producers going today that are a little lighter than Black folks. You'll see current greats as well those that are on their way to becoming household greats as well. Also, peep our Honorable Mentions section for more love for those that just barely missed the main list, but are no less dope and influential. With that being said, let's get into it shall we??
16. Marco Polo
Origins: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Collaborations: Masta Ace, Pharoahe Monch, Boot Camp Clik, Heltah Skeltah, Talib Kweli, Styles P, KRS-One, Vinnie Paz, Torae, R.A. The Rugged Man, others
We start from the great white north, Canada. One wouldn't conceive that excellent hip-hop producers would emerge from Canada, but this train of thought has been greatly eviscerated throughout the years and decades. One of which is Marco Polo. A native of Toronto, Polo caught on to the east coast sound by studying the likes of Preemo, Pete Rock, and DJ Scratch. Eventually moving to New York by the beginning of the century, he started working with the likes of Ed O.G., Torae, Wordsworth and BCC. His debut compilation album, Port Authority, featured heavyweights such as Large Professor, Buckshot, Roc Marciano, and O.C. and was bumped heavily during that period. He also collaborated with BCC affiliate, Rustee Jux, for the dope The Exxecution in 2009 and Torae for the hard-as-nails, Double Barrel, in 2007. However, it was when he got up with the legendary Masta Ace that more people realized how gifted he was as a producer. His unapologetically boom-bap style mixed with greatly used samples was right on time with Ace, who had been on quite the resurgence within his career, with albums like Disposable Arts, A Long Hot Summer, and The Falling Season being hailed as classics within the game during this century. Their first official collaborative album, A Breukelen Story, was released in 2018 to tremendous acclaim and showed the true chemistry these two possessed together. Seen as perhaps Polo's greatest overall production feat, Polo and Ace were seen as one of hip-hop's best emcee/producer duos around. Polo also reunited with Torae for their 2023 effort, Midnight Run, for another banger of an album. The follow-up to Ace & Polo's ABS, 2022's Richmond Hill, was every bit as knocking and profound, and further exemplified their cohesiveness together. Do yourself a favor and go back and listen to Polo's projects and production talents if you've been sleeping. It'll be well worth your time.
15. Statik Selektah
Origins: Boston, MA
Collaborations: Termanology, Talib Kweli, Styles P, REKS, Saigon, Bun B, Paul Wall, Slaine, Apathy, Freddie Gibbs, Evidence, Joey Bada$$, CJ Fly, Pro Era, Action Bronson, Bumpy Knuckles, others
From the town of Boston comes one of the game's most enduring, albeit somewhat underappreciated, DJs/producers, Statik Selektah. With his history of being a notable radio DJ, as well as a turntablist DJ, Statik started getting into the production side of things with his debut mixtape, Spell My Name Right, in '07, which included heavyweights such as Talib Kweli, Step Brothers (that's Evidence & The Alchemist by the way for those who didn't know), Jadakiss, Royce Da 5'9", and Joell Ortiz, as well as legends such as Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One, and Kool G. Rap. From that point on, he has released numerous mixtapes and full lengths such as Population Control, Round Trip, 100 Proof: The Hangover, Stick 2 Tha Script, and What Goes Around. These efforts all feature quite notable features that are esteemed notables in the game, thus showing the kind of respect and props he gets within the industry. In addition to these releases, he's been very much known for his collaborative albums. His efforts with the likes of Saigon (All In A Day's Work), Freddie Gibbs (Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away), Action Bronson (Well Done), KXNG Crooked (Statik KXNG), Paul Wall (Give Thanks), his series of releases with southern icon, Bun B (TrillStatik 1-5), and his work with fellow Massachusetts native, Termanology, as the duo 1982 (1982, 2012, Still 1982, The Quarantine) have all been very dope and have been on many fans' best of the year lists. His unapologetic sampled, boom-bap style is a definite throwback to those that greatly revel in the nineties sound. Even Bun, Curren$y, and Paul Wall sound great over his style of production that can somewhat blend into some bits of southern grit occasionally. With a forthcoming album on the way and collaborative efforts coming as well, you can expect Statik to be one name that remains in people's mouths as a heat-seeking producer, and just as formidable as a DJ. Just remember kiddies, spell his name right!
14. Jake One
Origins: Seattle, WA
Collaborations: Freeway, Prodigy, John Cena, Brother Ali, MF DOOM, De La Soul, G-Unit, Royce Da 5'9", Casual, others
With the exception of Sir Mix-A-Lot, Seattle isn't prominently known for mainstream hip-hop for the most part. While it's mainly known for seminal rock acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Pearl jam, and Alice In Chains, there are scatterings of hip-hop acts such as Macklemore and the very unorthodox, yet sonically unique, Shabazz Palaces. One pronounced producer that has made waves within hip-hop since the mid thousands has been Jake One. The man responsible for WWE legend/actor/voiceover guru, John Cena's theme song, "My Time Is Now", has been deeply entrenched within the game delivering hot work for the likes of Brother Ali, G-Unit, De La Soul, Rick Ross, Wale, Evidence, and even Rakim. His style of production is very east coast based, with boom-bap being his go-to style of sound, although he's not afraid to dip his hand into other styles such as trap and funk. His debut compilation full-length album of 2008, White Van Music, was filled with searing tracks and featured appearances from the likes of Prodigy, Busta Rhymes, Step Brothers, Royce Da 5'9", Elzhi, Little Brother, M.O.P., and MF DOOM. He has also been known for his collaborative efforts as well, primarily his work with former Roc soldier, Freeway, for The Stimulus Package, and its 2024 sequel, The Stimulus Package 2, both of which received good to great acclaim and showed that their chemistry is not to be ignored. He also did exclusive production work on brother Ali's tremendous 2012 offering, Mourning in America & Dreaming in Color, which easily rivaled a few of Ali's most treasured efforts as it was. One would be intrigued to hear what Jake has lined up this year and who he will be working with. While rumors of White Van Music 2 continue to make some small buzz, Jake one will regardless continue to be a big and respected name within hip-hop circles.
13. Graymatter
Origins: Richmond, VA
Collaborations: Mutant Academy, Conway The Machine, Chuck Strangers, Domo Genesis, Ty Farris, Evidence, Pink Siifu, AHNKLEJOHN, al.davino, 7XVETHEGENIUS, others
Virginia is mostly known for the likes of Pharrell, Missy Elliot, and Timbaland in terms of hip-hop producers. Not bad company with two of the genre's most influential and legendary producers. On the other hand, VA has some notable underground producers that also shouldn't be slept on whatsoever. One of which is Richmond native, Graymatter. Hailing from the very talented crew of emcees and producers, Mutant Academy, Graymatter is arguably their most revered beatsmith, and that's saying something considering others in the camp like UNLUCKY BASTARDS (who is his brother) and Tuamie are also excellent for their production abilities. Gray's style mainly consists of excellent sampling mixed with mainly soulful or atmospheric sounds, and this has resonated very well for fans of his since the mid to late teens. Originally sticking to his MA crew and doing stuff for emcees Big Kahuna OG, Fly Anakin, and Henny L.O., he eventually branched out to start working with artists like Domo Genesis, Conway, Ty Farris (their collab album, Sounds That Never Left My Soul, was hard), Chuck Strangers, and Evidence. In the case of Domo, they've released collaborative albums together in the forms of What You Don't Get? and 2025's EP, World Gone Mad. Both of which were nicely acclaimed. The talented noise of Graymatter will only continue to emerge and more and more people will get on to Gray's consistently excellent production. Be sure to check out anything Gray does throughout 2026, with or without Mutant Academy.
12. Nicholas Craven
Origins: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Collaborations: Boldy James, Mach-Hommy, Roscoe P. Coldchain, others
We already mentioned Canada as a low-key hot spot for hip-hop producers with Marco Polo being among the first to show his boom-bap roots. However, MP is far from the only talented hip-hop producer to emerge from the great big maple leaf country. Another one that has been in demand over the past few years has been Montreal native, Nicholas Craven. His style is fairly routine and not the most original with it being centered around heavy samples, chipmunk soul, and being fairly minimalist. On the other hand, he's also made a trend popular that has been divided within the hip-hop community: drum less percussion. A lot of his grooves aren't accompanied by head-nodding percussion, not even any snares. It's definitely polarizing, but for those that don't mind this style, his music alone is very rotational. Transitioning from punk rock to hip-hop in his teens, he started to gain an appreciation for east coast musings from the likes of Dilla to Just Blaze. Craven is mainly known for his collaborative efforts with the likes of Detroit bricklayer, Boldy James, and highly prolific underground artist, Tha God Fahim, however, he's also worked with the likes of billy woods, Your Old Droog, Mach-Hommy, fellow Canadians Jimmy D and Raz Fresco, and Ransom for his tremendous mixtape series, Director's Cut and Deleted Scenes. Already in 2026, we have been exposed to the knocking collaborative effort with Boldy and Ransom, Salvation for The Wicked, and the forthcoming effort with nearly forgotten about VA emcee, Roscoe P. Coldchain, Play with Something Safe. With word of another Boldy album, Ransom album, and other Canadian artists (not to mention his own compilation album, N3), Craven will have another busy year and his brand of drum-less chipmunk soul will fill our ears and speakers throughout this year, and it can be likely expected to be dumb dope.
11. Real Bad Man
Origins: Los Angeles, CA
Collaborations: Boldy James, ZelooperZ, Roc Marciano, Flee Lord, Pink Siifu, others
When one hears the name, Adam Weissman, hip-hop heads may not get a full recollection of whom this name belongs to. However, when heads hear the name, Real Bad Man, more heads nod in approval. Real Bad Man isn't just the name of one of the most intriguing producers in underground hip-hop, but the name belongs to a brand that includes visual and clothing design as well as a record label. Weissman was known initially for his mixtape series, High Alert, in the mid to late teens. From there, he caught the ear of aforementioned emcee, Boldy James, in 2021, and they delivered the very enjoyable, Real Bad Boldy, which still ranks among the best Boldy projects to this day. Once the buzz came out and the acclaim started spreading, he started to pair up with others such as Blu, Pink Siifu, Elcamino, and the legendary Kool Keith for his very dope effort, Serpent. As far as style goes, his sounds tend to dive into psychedelic and colorful samples while emphasizing minimalistic musical approaches with mainly lo-fi texture. He also isn't afraid to blend atmospheric with nostalgic and deliver percussion that can range from boom-bap to drum-less. His most recently acclaimed efforts are his effort with Bruiser Brigade member, ZelooperZ, Dear Psilocybin, and his third album with Boldy, Conversational Pieces, as both were delivered in 2025. If you're into lo-fi, psychedelic boom-bap as a whole for your musical taste in hip-hop, Real Bad Man is one that, if you haven't discovered him yet, you may want to.
10. Harry Fraud
Origins: New York City
Collaborations: Benny The Butcher, Curren$y, Dave East, French Montana, Smoke DZA, Action Bronson, Boldy James, Wiz Khalifa, Westside Gunn, Meyhem Lauren, others
Although his appearance is one of a seventies hippy with long, straggly hair and someone that easily could've been a part of Led Zeppelin, NYC's Harry Fraud is anything but a metal music stoner and someone who could double for the likes of Robert Plant. Fraud has been responsible for many of hip-hop's dopest instrumentals since the mid-thousands. Ever since being discovered by French Montana near the beginning of the teens, Fraud has been a fixture within the underground primarily. Although he has been mainly known for working with the likes of Montana and the late Chinx Drugz, he would also amass a lot of other notable pairings. He has been known to work with the likes of Smoke DZA, Curren$y, Westside Gunn, and Wiz Khalifa. His style of effective samples a strong percussion emphasis, and images of a Miami Vice-type style on occasion filled with horns and head-nodding basslines has attracted even more emcees and talents over the last several years. His acclaimed work has resulted in collaborative work with the likes of Benny The Butcher (The Plugs I Met 2), Dave East (Hoffa), Jim Jones (The Fraud Department), multiple albums with Curren$y (The Outrunners, The Director's Cut, and Never Catch Us), 38 Spesh (Beyond Belief), Boldy James (The Bricktionary), and his most recent effort with the ever charismatic Bruiser Wolf (Made By Dope). With an already very impressive discography under his belt, one would be wise to not sleep at all on Harry's 2026, with already a dope effort with the aforementioned Made By Dope, and certainly plenty more projects and collaborations that will keep his heat going throughout the year.
9. Child Actor
Origins: Boston, MA
Collaborations: Cavalier, Navy Blue, Armand Hammer, ELUCID, Open Mike Eagle, Previous Industries, PremRock, Fly Anakin, AKAI SOLO, ShrapKnel, others
If one were to ask who else thoroughly reps Boston proudly behind the boards besides the aforementioned Statik Selektah, one wouldn't have to go further than Child Actor. The former dream pop producer made a highly effective switch to hip-hop in the beginning of the tens working with the likes of Open Mike Eagle and local favorite, Ceschi. From there, he started working with Armand Hammer on their album, Shrines, as well as other Backwoodz Studios artists like AKAI SOLO, ELUCID, Fielded, and ShrapKnel. While he was getting a some noise within the underground, it was when his work on Armand Hammer's We Buy Diabetic Test Strips in '23 as well as his work with OME on his albums Component System With The Auto Reverse and Another Triumph of Ghetto Engineering where Child Actor's part avant garde, part psychedelic, part boom-bap style starting making more noise and more people were curious about this producer. He also exceled on his collaborative album with New Orleans resident, Cavalier, CINE which had followed Cav's exceptional effort from earlier in the year, Different Type Time (which also had Child Actor contributing to it on a cut called "50 Bags feat. Lord Chilla"). Gaining more and more momentum and being more in-demand, he started working on efforts from supergroup Previous Industries, ELUCID, PremRock, Fly Anakin, and four amazing cuts on Navy Blue's equally outstanding 2025 effort, The Sword & The Suffering, including the lead single, "Orchards", which took Actor into a more reflective, emotive space with his production on those cuts. Already, Child Actor has a project lined up in the form of Backwoodz emcee, Fatboi Sharif, and their collaborative album, Crayola Circles. One should expect more tremendous sounds from Child Actor this year, and it likely won't be long until he hits more mainstream appeal and more and more artists will hit him up for his dosage of minimalism while accentuating his undaunting sampling. Keep your eyes on Child Actor.
8. Sebb Bash
Origins: Lausanne, Switzerland
Collaborations: Infamous Mobb, Armand Hammer, ELUCID, billy woods, Evidence, Ty Farris, Navy Blue, PremRock, others
You know you're a profound producer when one the game's modern GOATs in The Alchemist co-signs you as his favorite producer, you know you're special. Switzerland's own Sebb Bash has been a low-key heat bubble since the mid-nineties. From crafting up goodies with Cage, Big Noyd and Infamous Mobb, to Jadakiss and Tony Yayo, Sebb has been putting in lots of work. Over the past few years, Sebb has gone away from traditional and consistent boom bap to more varied styles of production and experimentations that overall work and work profoundly. His recent work with the likes of Armand Hammer, Quelle Chris, ShrapKnel, Navy Blue, PremRock, and especially his widely acclaimed effort with ELUCID, I Guess You Had to Be There, has brought Sebb into new conversations of being in people's favorite producer discussions. Using mostly sample heavy sounds along with stripped back and occasionally psychedelic layers, Sebb has a way, much like Alchemist, of fine-tuning production to meet the needs of the artist he's working with now more than ever before. He also has been proficient in using various instruments to resonate with the listener. From flutes to woodwind instruments to hauntingly heavenly strings, Sebb can also turn those instruments into outstanding chops and loops to put a more symbiotic feel to the music between the sampling and the chop usages. As he's currently enjoying more consistent acclaim and success than he has within his almost forty-year career, expect Sebb to only provide more and more flames to keep your favorite producers and favorite artists checking for him
7. Ant
Origins: Minneapolis, MN
Collaborations: Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Murs, MF DOOM, others
For over twenty-five years, Minneapolis' own Ant has been arguably the most known hip-hop producer to come from that region. As half of the critically acclaimed duo, Atmosphere (along with emcee Slug), Ant has been mostly known and regarded for his work with Atmosphere, but also his exceptional work with Brother Ali for most of Ali's projects. His sounds mainly consist of samples, thick percussion, and obscure melodies that can bring out emotions and moods within the listener. Many point out Ant's production hit its most consistent and acclaimed levels on Atmosphere's highest charting album, When Life Gibes You Lemons, Paint That Shit Gold, as Ant implemented live instrumentation within the album in places, while also experimenting with other sounds to make the album arguably their best overall listening experience. On the other hand, just as many praise Ant for his quite tremendous work on Brother Ali albums, especially his amazing '03 effort, Shadows on The Sun, as well as follow ups Us, Champion EP, and The Undisputed Truth that were all equally as exceptional as the previous effort between '04 and '09. After eight years, they reunited to deliver the impressive All the Beauty in This Whole Life, then again in 2025 on the wonderful Satisfied Soul, showing that Ali may be in very close competition with Slug as to who really is the best to spit over an Ant beat. Whether it's aggressive and emotive or reflective and soulful, Ant knows how to tune into those emotions to make you feel. Not just bob your head, but to actually feel his music, and he's one of the ones who can do it as good as anyone else.
6. Evidence
Origins: Los Angeles, CA
Collaborations: Dilated Peoples, Planet Asia, Brother Ali, Infamous Mobb, The Alchemist, Blu, Rakaa Iriscience, others
As one-third of the acclaimed Cali group, Dilated Peoples, Evidence was quite involved in their musical direction, being a chief producer for their sound along with the likes of DJ Babu and close Cali homie, The Alchemist. Although he is a native Cali dweller, and quite proud of it, his sound is primarily east coast based, especially the samples he uses and how they're crafted. This emcee/producer started finding his own niche behind the boards a lot more consistently when he dropped his debut solo effort, 07's fantastic, The Weatherman LP, was a triumphant look at Ev's world and all of its honesty with four tracks self-produced. Aside from Dilated projects, as well as his own dumb dope solo efforts, "Mr. Slow Flow" has crafted excellent treats for the likes of Reks, Roc Marci, Raekwon, Big Twins of Infamous Mobb, the late, great Sean Price, and Apathy. He has likewise presented collaborative albums with him being exclusively behind the boards with emcees such as Brother Ali (Secrets & Escapes), Planet Asia (The Medicine, Rule of Thirds), Domo Genesis (Aren't U Glad You're U, Intros, Outros, & Interludes), and Blu (Los Angeles) to lots of acclaim. Whether it's on the mic or on the boards, Evidence is highly talented and has a knack for sounds and lyrics that fit the imagery he wants to convey. As recently as the beginning of the year, he collaborated with prolific underground emcee, CRIMEAPPLE, for the effort, War Cash, thus showing how he takes pride in his dual skills. Here's to hoping for more from Ev, especially if it's a Step Brothers reunion with Alchemist or even Unlearning Vol. 3.
5. Kenny Segal
Origins: Los Angeles, CA
Collaborations: Armand Hammer, R.A.P. Ferriera, K-the-I, Open Mike Eagle, Serengeti, Busdriver, others
One of the underground's most consistently heralded producers to emerge from the west coast is multi-instrumentalist, Kenny Segal. Formerly a member of Team Supreme and his band, The Jefferson Park Boys, Segal has been embraced within hip-hop circles since 2008 but really got his first bit of true shine producing and crafting R.A.P. Ferreira's outstanding effort of 2015, So the Flies Don't Come (when Ferriera was then known as Milo). The psychedelic jazz and stripped back, yet highly engaging and hypnotic, samples that walk between soulful and dense with lo-fi texture is what tends to define Segal's very intriguing, yet eclectic, production style. This showed up very much on Ferreira's aforementioned, So the Flies Don't Come as well as other efforts with him including Who Told You to Think?!?!, Purple Moonlight Pages, and the most recent highly excellent outing, The Night Green Side of It. However, he goes even more dense and haunting when he collaborates with the likes of Armand Hammer, more specifically billy woods. The first indication of how incredible they mesh came in the form of the unforgettable, Hiding Place, in 2019, and followed that up with the almost as exceptional, Maps, in 2023. The lo-fi bare bones of Segal's production with the scholarly pessimistic and clever brilliance of woods made both these projects among woods best albums within his already undefeated discography. One would best serve to tune in to see what Kenny Segal has cooking this year and always expect Segal to provide sounds that will haunt, hypnotize, and most of all mesmerize you in all aspects.
4. Daringer
Origins: Buffalo, NY
Collaborations: Griselda, Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, Benny The Butcher, Rome Streetz, Action Bronson, Raz Fresco, Evidence, al.davino, Estee Nack, Meyhem Lauren, others
Straight from Griselda country of Buffalo, NY comes a producer many have compared to a modern GOAT in The Alchemist, Daringer. Griselda's main in-house producer has been the most influential sound of Griselda since 2012 when he was working on Westside Gunn's first entry in his treasured Hitler Wears Hermes series. From there, Conway and Benny hopped on, and their efforts matched the matching haunting, chilling, and menacing boom-bap production Gunn had been using. This was especially true on Conway's Reject 2, in which Daringer made his sound a tad more polished, but no less ominous. Once Gunn dropped the now classic, Flygod, in 2016, Daringer produced most of the album and his production skills really started to get more notice. Since then, his brand of macabre boom-bap has been extended to be worked with the likes of Raz Fresco, Mach-Hommy, Action Bronson, Evidence, and Meyhem Lauren, with he and Rome Streetz delivering a monstrous full-length collaborative effort in '23, Hatton Garden Holdup. Although still relegated to mostly in-house efforts with the Griselda gang, he still has stuff cooking including his long awaited collab album with Houston rhymer, Sauce Walka, and others. It would be wise to not sleep at all on Daringer this year or any other, as the "Great Value Alchemist" is showing he's more than just a Great Value of anyone. He's an ace in the hole all by himself.
3. DJ Muggs
Origins: Los Angeles, CA
Collaborations: Cypress Hill, Mobb Deep, Infamous Mobb, GZA, Meyhem Lauren, Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, Goodie Mobb, Rome Streetz, Roc Marciano, Planet Asia, others
Among the most legendary and influential producers of the past four decades has been New York born, L.A. raised, DJ Muggs. The DJ/producer most known for being a part of the equally legendary and influential rap group, Cypress Hill, Muggs was responsible for most of their acclaimed efforts including their excellent self-titled debut, their breakout sophomore album, Black Sunday, their menacing third effort, Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom, and the underrated Cypress Hill IV. Apart from Cypress Hill, he organized a crew and brand called Soul Assassins, and he presented the first compilation album, Muggs Presents...Soul Assassins Chapter One, in '97, which featured the likes of GZA & RZA of Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Infamous Mobb, Goodie Mobb, and even Dr. Dre, in which he collaborated with Hill lead emcee, B-Real, on the ominous "Puppet Master". His brand of dark, atmospheric, and murky production has been a staple of his, especially since Temples of Boom, and has been shown in other important producers up to, and including, one-time protege now all-timer himself in The Alchemist. This was even more apparent in his follow-up Soul Assassins albums in 2000, 2009, 2018, and 2023. He also has done full collaborative albums with the likes of Meyhem Lauren, Roc Marci, Jay Worthy, Sick Jacken, Flee Lord, Planet Asia, CRIMEAPPLE, and GZA on the much heralded, Grandmasters, in '05. With an upcoming effort with another talented Cali artist in T.F., as well as a reported sequel to 2020's Death & The Magician with Rome Streetz, and a full-length with Tennessee's Heartbreak JC, Muggs remains among the most respected and acclaimed producers to exist in the culture. Even with four decades under his belt, it doesn't appear Muggs will be slowing down anytime soon.
2. El-P
Origins: Brooklyn, NY
Collaborations: Run The Jewels, Killer Mike, Cannibal Ox, Company Flow, Armand Hammer, billy woods, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Cage, others
In the late nineties, a young New Yorker named El Producto (or El-P for short) established himself in the gritty sectors of the underground being a part of a crew called Company Flow, alongside Mr. Len and Bigg Jus. Their debut album, Funcrusher Plus, was a landmark album that was as brooding as it was ambitious. Known for his unique production style of mixing EDM with elements of industrial, lo-fi, and boom-bap that often sound dense with analog and lo-fi mixing, El-P's style is typically referred to as "chaotic" or "noisy", which coming from New York is quite expected but only in the most gritty and atmospheric. This was not more prevalent than his work on Cannibal Ox's unbelievable epic, The Cold Vein, from 2001. Even more haunting, apocalyptic, and grisly than Funcrusher Plus, what El-P did on this album catapulted him into one of hip-hop's most intriguing producers and put more eyes on him. He continued his momentum with Aesop Rock's Labor Days and his own solo effort, Fantastic Damage. Both albums were highly acclaimed and made El-P be on a lot of people's favorite producer lists. After delivering less-noise making albums, he delivered two more solo efforts in 2007 and 2012 respectively in the forms of I'll Sleep When You're Dead and Cancer 4 Cure, which was a tribute to longtime friend and emcee, Camu Tao, who died of lung cancer in 2008. However, it was once the tens came when El-P hit paydirt, as he started working with Dungeon Family alumnus, Killer Mike, on his excellent R.A.P. Music. It was at this point they decided to come together to become arguably the most revered and acclaimed hip-hop duo of the teens, Run the Jewels. With four legit classics under their belt, El-P was responsible for all of the rambunctious, yet infectious, sounds of all the albums they put out together. Outside of RTJ, El-P has worked with the likes of Armand Hammer, Cage, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, and billy woods. With the possibility of RTJ5 dropping this year, expect El-P to further his career as one of hip-hop's most unique and driven emcees/producers.
1. The Alchemist

When it comes to generational hip-hop producers, one of the ones that many fellow producers, critics, and colleagues have all unanimously agree upon is Cali native, The Alchemist. Born Alan Maman, the former Wholiganz member started his production roots under the guidance of DJ Muggs back in the mid-nineties. From there, he started delivering heat to the likes of Dilated Peoples and Defari. He grew to more national levels when he produced two of the hardest cuts on Mobb Deep's third epic, Murda Muzik, in the forms of "Thug Muzik" and the hard-as-nails Kool G. Rap-assisted, "The Realest". From that point on, it was full speed ahead and he ended up being among the most talked out up-and-coming producers in hip-hop by the early to mid-thousands, having worked with the likes of Infamous Mobb, Scarface, T.I., Styles P, Cormega, and was even DJing for Eminem. His penchant for sample-heavy production mixed with often layered textures, murky melodies, and genius-leveled chops made him among the most in-demand producers by the end of the thousands. Going into the tens, he was building up his legacy even more delivering music with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Roc Marciano, Sean Price, and a new crew emerging known as Griselda. He was also beginning to do more collaborative efforts as well, plus some compilation efforts, and more instrumental albums. Once he hit the twenties, he had no peers virtually. His production got even more incredible, even more consistent, and continuing to influence and inspire many producers coming to this very day. Already, he has delivered all-timers with the likes of Roc Marciano, Armand Hammer, Boldy James, and has some in the chamber such as his very highly anticipated effort with Yasiin Bey, Erykah Badu, and another Gangrene album with partner-in-rhyme, Oh No. Gangrene's albums of Gutter Water, the unorthodox Vodka & Ayahuasca, the fantastic You Disgust Me, and 2024's phenomenal Heads I win, Tails You Lose show how proficient and skilled he is on the mic as well as on the boards. Whether it's the mainstream and commercial level, or it's the underground, Alchemist has shown himself to rightfully belong in the upper echelon of hip-hop producers and are on many emcees Mount Rushmore of producers. Compilation albums of his such as Flying High, Chemical Warfare, The Cutting Room Floor, This Thing of Ours (1 & 2), and Yacht Rock are all considered excellent showcases of worthy emcees showcasing their abilities over some of Al's most endearing and substantial production. His collaborative albums started really gaining momentum and acclaim by the project, as his works with the likes of the late, great Prodigy (Return Of The Mac, Albert Einstein), Roc Marciano (The Elephant Man's Bones, The Skelton Key), Havoc (The Silent Weapon), Armand Hammer (HARAM, Mercy), Curren$y (Continuance, The Carrolton Heist, Covert Coup), Freddie Gibbs (Alfredo, Alfredo 2, Fetti with Curren$y), and Action Bronson (Rare Chandeliers) started making him the go-to guy for sizzling collaborative efforts and more notoriety for the Cali -born, NY-bred genius. By the way, don't sleep on his emceeing either. As was evidenced on his albums with Oh No as Gangrene, his effort with fellow Cali producer/emcee, Evidence, as Step Brothers, his own highly acclaimed effort of 2024, The Genuine Articulate, and of course his biggest single to date, "Hold U Down" with Prodigy, Illa Ghee, and Nina Sky from his outstanding, 1st Infantry, compilation of 2003. Regarded in the same breath as the likes of Preemo, Dre, RZA, Pete Rock, and Havoc, Alchemist has cemented himself as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all-time and is not slowing down any time soon. With more albums on the way with the likes of Conway, Rome Streetz, and more, chances are he will have another monumental year, and it's scary to think what else Alan the Chemist has cooking in his lab for the rest of the year.
